#5 Plastics

We partner with Community on the Rise (COTR) and collect #5 plastics in support of the recycling work they do in downtown Birmingham. Not only is this recycling work a benefit for the environment by eliminating post-consumer waste, but they employ survivors of trauma, poverty, and homelessness in order to do so. This empowering ministry also sells the recycled goods as fundraising for their ID recovery program that helps people regather important documents. Read more about COTR and shop their products here.

You can check for #5 plastics by looking for the imprinted recycling sign on plastic products and seeing if there is a “5” inside the triangle. Common things that are usually #5 plastics include yogurt cups, butter tubs, medicine bottles, take-out boxes, and cups. #5 plastics are not recyclable using curbside bins and COTR is the only organization in our state that recycles them.

Bring your #5 plastics to the church office during the week or church on Sundays and we will drop them off at COTR for you. More directions herePlease make sure your plastics are thoroughly washed and cleaned.
